Stories from Tasmania's Southern Forest - Logging, sawmilling, shipping.

The dense hardwood forests of Southern Tasmania, bordering the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, were extensive at the time of European settlement. Originally the timber was harvested manually by splitting and pit-sawing. The first of many steam driven saw mills appeared in the 1850s and were situated by rivers and bays handy for shipping.

Generations of families followed their fathers into the forest. We hear first-hand accounts from people with an intimate knowledge of the trade as it was carried out in the mid 1900s, during the closing years of steam and sail.
