People, Pottery & Painting: Life Stories of Eileen Brooker by Sue Abdullah | PB

  • $8500

The first biography of Tasmanian modernist, Eileen Brooker, written using published sources, notes, interviews and 40 years of personal correspondence with the artist.

Born in 1922, Eileen Brooker grew up in Montrose, a suburb of Hobart. She became a potter and painter who has filtered her life experiences through the colourful prism of her art. Her artistic journey now reaches beyond 103 years.

Eileen’s stories unfold chronologically from her early influences and art training in Australia, to her overseas travel in the 1950s and her work in four English potteries. Returning to Australia in 1954, Eileen contributed greatly to art education in various Tasmanian educational institutions for some fifty years, all the while continuing with her own art practice in ceramics and painting.

People and relationships have always been central to Eileen’s life, and some of the stories of people she has held dear are woven into this book.
